Benefits of Concrete & Asphalt
Concrete and asphalt are the two main paving materials used across Columbus, and each one has clear strengths. Asphalt is often chosen for large areas and roads because it installs quickly and can be repaired in sections, while concrete holds up well under heavy, stationary loads and in high-traffic spots. Bruck Construction installs both, and the right choice depends on how the surface will be used, the site conditions and your long-term plans.
What does asphalt do well?
Asphalt is a mix of crushed stone, called aggregate, bound together with a petroleum-based binder, which is the sticky material that holds the stone in place. It is spread hot and rolled flat, then cools into a surface that can be driven on soon after installation. Asphalt is also flexible. It can absorb small amounts of ground movement without breaking as easily as a rigid slab, which makes it a practical choice for driveways, drive lanes and parking lots.
Asphalt is also easy to repair. A damaged section can be cut out and replaced without rebuilding the whole surface. For property owners who want a surface that can be maintained in stages, that flexibility is a real advantage.
What does concrete do well?
Concrete is a mix of cement, sand, gravel and water that hardens into a rigid slab. It resists rutting and wear under heavy, slow-moving loads such as dumpsters, loading docks and delivery trucks. Its light color also reflects more sunlight than dark asphalt, which can help keep surfaces cooler in summer. When it is properly placed, cured and jointed, concrete tends to last a long time with relatively routine care.
How do Ohio freeze-thaw cycles affect each one?
Ohio winters bring repeated freezing and thawing. Water that gets into a crack expands as it freezes and pushes the surface apart. Each cycle widens the damage a little more. Asphalt tends to crack over time and needs crack sealing and sealcoating to keep water out. Concrete handles freeze-thaw well when it has the right mix, which includes tiny air bubbles that give the paste room to expand. It can still scale or crack at joints if water is allowed to sit there.
In either material, keeping water out is the main goal. Clean drains, good slope and timely crack repair do more to extend the life of a surface than almost anything else.
Which one costs less over time?
Upfront cost depends on the size of the job, the site preparation needed and the materials at the time of the project. For that reason, it is better to compare written estimates than to rely on general rules. Over the life of a surface, the total cost depends mostly on maintenance. Asphalt generally needs sealcoating and crack filling on a regular schedule. Concrete needs less routine upkeep, but a failed slab can require more involved repair.
Which is better for driveways and parking lots?
For most driveways, asphalt is a common choice because it is well suited to residential work and can be installed efficiently. Concrete is often chosen where a finished look is important, or for areas with heavy turning loads, such as dumpster pads, entrance aprons and loading zones. Many properties use both, with asphalt for the main drive or lot and concrete where the wear is heaviest.

Frequently asked questions
Is concrete always better than asphalt?
No. Concrete is stronger under heavy, stationary loads, but asphalt is often a better fit for large areas and roads. The right choice depends on use, traffic and site conditions.
Can asphalt and concrete be used together on one property?
Yes. Many properties use asphalt for drive lanes and parking areas and concrete for loading pads, entrances or dumpster areas. We can recommend a combination in your written estimate.
Does Bruck guarantee its paving and concrete work?
Yes. Bruck gives a 1-year guarantee on all asphalt and concrete work. Ask us for the details when you receive your estimate.
