Signs you need it
- Alligator cracking: a web of small interlocking cracks, which means the base under the surface is failing
- Ponding deeper than half an inch after rain, which shows the surface has settled or lost its slope
- Raveling, where stones pop loose and the surface feels rough or sandy
- Potholes or soft spots that keep coming back after patching
- Edges crumbling away from the grass or the garage apron
- Repair patches now cover more of the driveway than original asphalt
Our process
- We walk the driveway with you, measure it and check drainage, slope and the base.
- You get a written quote with the scope, the thickness and the materials.
- We saw-cut edges, remove the old asphalt and grade the base.
- We compact an aggregate base, then place and roll hot-mix asphalt.
- We clean up, then walk the finished driveway with you and explain curing.
Options and materials
Full replacement or overlay
If the base is sound, a new surface course over cleaned and patched asphalt can work. If the base is moving or cracked through, only a full tear-out and new base will hold. We tell you which one we see.
Aggregate base
A well-compacted stone base spreads load and drains water. A thin base over soft soil is the most common reason a new driveway fails in the first few winters.
2 in vs 3 in of asphalt
Two inches of compacted asphalt is common for cars and light trucks. Three inches, placed as a binder course plus a finer surface course, is a better fit for heavy trucks, RVs, steep grades or a long driveway.
Binder and surface course
The binder course is the structural layer with larger stone. The surface course goes on top, with finer stone for a smooth, tight finish that sheds water.
Ohio freeze-thaw
Water gets into cracks, freezes and expands, then thaws and leaves a void. Good drainage, a tight surface and early crack repair matter more here than almost anything else.
What moves the price
Every job is priced after we see it. These are the factors that change the number:
- Square footage and shape of the driveway
- Thickness: 2 in or 3 in, and one lift or two
- Condition of the existing base and how much has to be removed
- Drainage and grade work, culverts or aprons
- Access for trucks and equipment
- Edges, curbs, turnarounds and extensions
- Time of year and schedule
We measure, then put the scope, materials and price in a written estimate. Estimates are free.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a new asphalt driveway take to install?
Most residential driveways are done in one to two days of work on site, after the quote is approved and a date is set. Weather and base repairs can add time.
How long should I stay off a new asphalt driveway?
Stay off it until the crew tells you it is ready, usually a couple of days in warm weather. Hot or soft asphalt can scuff from tight turning of tires, so avoid turning the wheel while the car is stopped for the first few weeks.
Should I replace or resurface my driveway?
If the base is firm and the cracks are mostly on the surface, resurfacing can work. If you see alligator cracking, deep ruts or ponding, the base is usually the problem and a full replacement is the better fix.
Can you pave in cold weather?
Hot-mix asphalt needs warm ground and air to compact properly. Paving is best from late spring through early fall. Call and we will tell you what is realistic for your date.
When can I seal a new asphalt driveway?
New asphalt needs time to cure before its first seal. See our page on what to expect from your new asphalt, and ask us at the walk-through.
Do I need a permit?
Replacements, extensions and work at the street or sidewalk can need a city permit. Check with your city or village, and ask us what we see on your property.
