Signs you need it
- Cracks wider than a quarter inch that hold water
- Alligator cracking, a web of small cracks that points to a failing base
- Potholes that return after being filled
- Ponding deeper than half an inch after rain
- Sunken areas near the garage apron, culverts or utility lines
- Edges breaking off along the grass line
Our process
- We inspect and mark every problem area, and check what is under it.
- We tell you honestly whether a repair is enough or the section needs replacing.
- We clean and fill cracks, or saw-cut and remove failed asphalt.
- We repair the base if it is soft, then place and compact new hot mix, tied into the old edge.
- We clean up and recommend when to seal.
Options and materials
Crack filling
Filling cracks with a flexible, hot-applied or pourable sealant keeps water out of the base. It works best on narrow, active cracks before they spread.
Cut-and-patch
For failed areas we saw-cut square edges, remove the bad asphalt and soft base, then rebuild with compacted base and hot mix. This lasts much longer than a surface patch.
Hot-mix vs cold patch
Cold patch is a temporary fix for potholes. Hot-mix, compacted and tied into the old edge, is the lasting repair.
Base repair
If water has softened the base, patching the top will fail. Fixing the base is what makes the repair hold.
Ohio freeze-thaw
Fill cracks in the cooler months or early spring when they are open, and keep water out before it freezes in them.
What moves the price
Every job is priced after we see it. These are the factors that change the number:
- Number, width and length of cracks
- Size and depth of patches
- Whether the base under the patch is sound
- Drainage problems that caused the damage
- Access and equipment needed
- Whether sealing follows the repair
We measure, then put the scope, materials and price in a written estimate. Estimates are free.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing my driveway or should I replace it?
If damage is limited to cracks and a few small areas on a firm base, repair is worth it. If more than about a third of the driveway is patched or failing, replacement or resurfacing usually costs less over time.
What causes alligator cracking?
A weak base or soil under the asphalt. Repeated loads and freeze-thaw flex it until the surface cracks into a web. Surface patches do not last unless the base is fixed.
Why does my pothole patch keep coming back?
Water is getting under the patch, or the base under it is soft. A cut-and-patch with a repaired base fixes the cause.
Should I fill cracks myself?
Small, narrow cracks can be filled with a store-bought filler as a short-term measure. Wider or growing cracks, and anything with ponding, are better handled by a crew.
When should I seal after a repair?
Once the new patch has cured, which we explain at the job. Sealing evens out the look and protects the repair.
Do you repair concrete driveways?
We pour and replace concrete driveways. See our concrete driveway page, and call us to talk about your slab.
