Understanding Proper Water Management

Proper water management means guiding rain and snowmelt off a paved or concrete surface and away from the structure, so water does not sit, soak into the base, or freeze in place. Good grading, working drainage, and well-placed catch basins handle most of that job. When a catch basin fails, catch basin repair is usually the fix to plan around.

Why Does Slope Matter for Pavement?

Pavement should slope so water moves toward drains at a steady rate rather than settling in low spots. The planned slope is called grading, and it is set when the surface is built. Flat or dipped areas collect water, and that water works its way down into the base, which is the layer of compacted crushed stone that carries the surface's load.

How Do Drainage Systems Move Water Away?

Drainage systems collect surface water at inlets, then carry it through pipes to a safe outlet. The main parts are:

  • Catch basins, which are below-grade boxes with grates that collect runoff from the surface.
  • Pipes that connect basins and carry water away from the pavement.
  • Curbs, gutters, and swales, which are shallow channels that guide water toward inlets.
  • Outlets, which discharge water where it will not undermine the pavement or the building.

Each part has to be sized and placed for the site. A basin in the wrong spot, or a pipe that is too small, can leave water with nowhere to go.

What Is Ponding and Why Is It a Problem?

Ponding is standing water that stays on a surface for a long time after rain stops. It is a problem because water seeps through small cracks and softens the base, which speeds up deterioration. In winter, standing water can freeze into ice, which creates a hazard for people and vehicles.

How Does Freeze-Thaw Damage Pavement in Ohio?

Freeze-thaw damage happens when water gets into a crack, freezes, and expands, widening the crack. When the ice thaws, more water enters the gap. Repeated cycles over a single winter can turn a hairline crack into a larger break, and that break can grow into a pothole if the base softens underneath it.

When Should You Call for Catch Basin Repair?

Call for catch basin repair when a component is damaged or water is not draining the way it should. Common signs include:

  • A grate that is broken, missing, or loose.
  • A basin that is cracked, sunken, or leaking.
  • Silt or debris that keeps the basin from draining after storms.
  • Water backing up near the basin during or after rain.

Catch basin repair is one of our specialties, and we will explain the options in a written estimate.

What Can Property Owners Check Between Visits?

Simple checks between visits can catch problems early. Look for these:

  • Water that stands longer than usual after rain.
  • Leaves, mulch, and sediment packed around grates.
  • New cracks near low spots or along edges.
  • Downspouts that discharge onto paved areas instead of away from them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does water pool in my parking lot?

The usual causes are low spots that formed as the base settled, or a drain that is clogged or not placed correctly. A site visit can show which one applies.

Is ponding always a sign of a big problem?

Not always. A single shallow puddle after a heavy storm may be harmless. Repeated ponding in the same place is worth investigating, since it tends to get worse over time.

Do you handle catch basin repair?

Yes. Catch basin repair is one of Bruck Construction's specialties, and we explain the options in a written estimate.
